Ongoing service opportunities:

  • Our Daily Bread (6 times/year, second Mondays in January, March, May, July, September, and November). Contact JoBeth Allen at jobethal@uga.edu.

  • Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens (4 times/year with Young Harris Memorial UMC to provide meals, transportation, and other hospitality to families in transition)

Members of Oconee Street UMC serve the community as individuals and cooperatively through:

  • Ministries that provide food to people with limited resources: Our Daily Bread and Smart Kid, Smart Lunch/Seamless Summer
  • Ministries that make shelter available to those in need: Interfaith Hospitality Network, Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Athens Land Trust, Bigger Vision Shelter, Salvation Army Shelter, and Hands on Athens/Northeast Georgia
  • Bicycle and other recycling programs and GROW, Generating Respect for Our World
  • Efforts to make this a fairer and more just world, including participation in the Economic Justice Coalition; Living Wage Committee; Look, Listen and Learn; Freedom University; and raising money for kids who can’t afford to shop at school book fairs
  • Local efforts to make this a happier world through the Salvation Army Project Angel Tree so more children can have Christmas presents and making personal care kits for guests of Our Daily Bread
  • Meeting health care needs by working with Mercy Health Center and the Athens Nurses Clinic and serving as health educators , school nurses, physician assistants, and physicians
  • Providing companionship to the elderly at Talmadge Terrace
  • Unofficial chaplaincy to Athens Ben Epps Airport
  • Teaching and tutoring adults through Action Ministries GED Program, volunteering and working at local schools and the Thomas Lay After School Program – teaching, tutoring, providing gardening and outdoor education – promoting education and serving as role models
